明永乐十八年（1420年建，初名华盖殿，嘉靖时改名中极殿，清顺治二年（1645年）始称今名。
平面呈方形，黄琉璃瓦四角攒尖顶，正中有鎏金宝顶。
皇帝有事去大和殿先在此小憩，接受内阁礼部及待卫执事人员等的朝拜。
每逢加皇太后徽号和各种大札前一大，皇帝也在此阅览奏章和祝辞。
